Were you looking for Stage 4 of Um Jammer Lammy or PaRappa the Rapper 2?

Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap, also known as Seafood Cake, is the fourth stage of PaRappa the Rapper, in the chapter "Guaranteed to Catch Her Heart"

Stage Composition[]

Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap is in D minor at 200 BPM

Chapter[]

Plot[]

Guarenteed to catch her heart

The chapter begins with PaRappa, PJ. and Katy at Phat Donut, which has been poorly repaired after Joe Chin backed his car into it, with the sign now having "FLAT DONUT" written on it. The trio prepare for Sunny's birthday, and decide who to get the presents, get the cake, or set up by playing JANKEN (Japanese for Rock, Paper, Scissors). After three rounds, Katy gets to set up the party, PJ gets to bring the present, and PaRappa gets to get the cake.

PaRappa goes to the local cake shoppe, but couldn't decide whether to get a three-layer, pink "Total Love" cake with hearts decorated on it, or a brown cake with daisies on it. But being short on cash, he settles on the Daisy cake and buys it. He then imagines Sunny being completely ecstatic about the cake.

However, the moment PaRappa steps out of the cake shoppe, Joe Chin shows up to one-up him, and shows off the 42-layer cake that he got for Sunny, explaining in his usual long-winded way, what each layer represents as a step in his supposed relationship with her. When Joe finally finishes explaining his cake, he jovially slaps PaRappa on the back, but at the same time, failing to know his own strength, knocks him over, causing him to fall face-first into his newly-purchased Daisy cake.

Immediately after, Katy lays into PaRappa with a brutal scolding. After he wonders what he would do to get a new cake, he gets a brilliant idea, and decides to bake a cake by watching Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Show.

The chapter starts at Flat Donut, where PaRappa, PJ, and Katy are eating donuts and ice cream.

Katy OK, it's Sunny's birthday tomorrow and for the party, we need someone to get a present, we need someone to buy a cake, and someone to set up.

PaRappa Uh huh, and how should we decide?

Katy Well, how about JANKEN?

PaRappa Good idea!

Katy Ready?

PaRappa, PJ & Katy JAN, KEN, PON!

PaRappa and PJ both pick rock, while Katy picks paper.

Katy Yeah, I won! I'll be the set-up producer.

PaRappa Alright. Let's continue.

PaRappa & PJ JAN, KEN, PON!

Both PaRappa and PJ pick paper.

PaRappa Oops! One more time.

PaRappa & PJ JAN, KEN, PON!

PJ picks scissors, and PaRappa picks paper.

PJ I won! I'll get the present.

Katy And that means you have to get the cake, PaRappa.

PaRappa OK.

Katy Alright everybody, let's all do our jobs and get ready for tomorrow!

PaRappa & PJ Right on!!

It cuts to PaRappa going to Sweety CAKES to get the cake for Sunny. He looks at all of the cakes, and gets stuck with a pink "Total Love" cake with hearts on it, and a brown cake with daisies on it. He pictures him and Sunny sat down at a table with the daisy cake, and settles on it. On his way out, he encounters Joe Chin who's holding a cake that he got for Sunny.

Joe Chin Hiya, PaRappa! Tomorrow's the big day, isn't it? You wanna see the cake that I got for Sunny? Look!

The camera pans up, revealing how tall the cake really is.

Joe Chin The 1st floor represents the foundation of Sunny and I, a long relationship between a boy and a girl. All depends on the foundation, you know. The 2nd floor represents beauty. Being as beautiful as she is, Sunny deserves all the rights to the word "Beauty." The 3rd floor represents the obstacles that we must face...

Joe Chin's voice speeds up until it is unintelligible, before slowing to normal speed again.

Joe Chin ...just to keep our awesome relationship. The 42nd floor represents all the sights and sounds that Sunny and I will be experiencing in our glorious future.

As the camera pans up, it is revealed that a plane had crashed into the top layer, which has a cake topper of Joe Chin and Sunny on top.

Joe Chin Well, enough for now, I shall explain everything in better detail tomorrow. See ya!!

Joe Chin pushes PaRappa over, and he lands head-first into his Daisy cake. He pictures what Katy's reaction would be if she found out about this.

Katy PaRappa! What do you expect to do without a cake!? A birthday party without a cake is like a dance floor without me! Do you understand that!!??

PaRappa sighs.

PaRappa What should I do? I'm in trouble now... what should I do? I'm almost out of money, I need a cake, cheap... cheap... yeah! I know! I gotta BELIEVE!!

It cuts to Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's show on PaRappa's TV.

Announcer Welcome to the Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken Show. Today's dish will be seafood cake, guaranteed to catch her heart. And now, here she is!

It cuts to PaRappa writing "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUNNY" on his Seafood Cake with white frosting, and going to bed afterwards.

It cuts to PaRappa writing "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUNNY" on his Seafood Cake with white frosting, and going to bed afterwards. He pictures Sunny blowing him kisses while sat on a table with him and the Daisy cake.

Stage[]

The song supposedly takes place in PaRappa's kitchen, with green walls with several kinds of vegetables on them, and a black sign with "CHEAP CHEAP" written on it in purple text on Cheap Cheap's side. Behind them are two purple ovens on small, brown counters, and in front of them are much longer counters with chicken legs on the sides and a white countertop, with bowls and cups littering them, along with a bag of seafood for the cake. When in Bad mode, Cheap Cheap gets out of the TV and stands next to PaRappa angrily, and when in Awful mode, Cheap Cheap starts bouncing up and down, her face reddening in rage.

Cheap Cheap I hate to interrupt, but... that was bad!

End of Level Dialogue[]

Cheap Cheap OK, OK! That wasn't so hard, was it?

PaRappa No problem! But how did you get out of the TV?

Cheap Cheap squawks and lays an egg on the countertop, which hatches a few seconds later.

Chick Peep peep! (Try again!)

Mode Differences[]

Cool: The instrumental is the same like Good mode, but the quality is higher. Cheap Cheap will say "You don't need me, I'll just turn the TV off and rest."

Bad: The instrumental will change into the first half of Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap, which is the same intro from Good/Cool mode at first, and then, only the clavinet from the first half of the instrumental is playing. Cheap Cheap will get out of the TV, causing it to not air, and she gets angry. The instrumental is also followed by the classic duck quack.

Awful: The instrumental will change into the second half of Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap, which features the loop of an electric banjo chord progression: (F minor - F minor - B minor - A minor). It also features the Duck Quack. A shorter version of the second half of Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap during AWFUL is played during the Bad/Awful ending. Cheap Cheap is furious at PaRappa, as if her face is reddening with rage, causing her to fly around and bounce up and down angrily.

Trivia[]

  • The theme music of Cheap Cheap's show is a slower version of "Tijuana Taxi" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
  • If the wrong button is pressed, the stove next to PaRappa will combust violently, causing him to fall back.
  • The line "'Cause money and time's just what we don't have." comes from the fact that he had used all of his money to buy the cake in the cutscene before the stage.
  • This stage is widely considered by players to be the most difficult stage in the game. This is likely due to players needing more precise timing and extra notes in between to complete it. In addition, the more lenient timing introduced to most stages in PaRappa The Rapper Remastered (compensating for increased input lag on modern TV sets) does not apply to Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's Rap, increasing its relative difficulty.
  • To celebrate PaRappa the Rapper's 25th anniversary, PlayStation Japan made a tweet including a tutorial on how to make Seafood Cake.[1]
  • There is an error in the chapter's cutscene, as after Katy wins their first round of JANKEN, her role is shown as "PRODUCER," but after PaRappa's role is announced, it switches to "DIRECTOR."
    • Additionally, when Katy announces PaRappa's role, his name is misspelled as "Parrapa"
